Memorial Day to Focus on Work-Related Suicide

Trade union officials and representatives of faith-based organisations and the main churches, along with civil society bodies will gather in Dublin tomorrow to mark International Workers' Memorial Day.
International Workers' Memorial Day is marked around the globe and takes place each year on April 28, in memory of those who have been hurt or killed at work. The theme of the 2011 Dublin commemoration is work-related suicide.
Organised by the Irish Congress of Trade the 2011 commemoration will be held at the Labour History Museum in Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 2. The event begins at 10.30am.
The main dedication will be delivered by Congress President Jack O'Connor and the event will also feature contributions from: Martin OHalloran (CEO Health & Safety Authority) , Ciaran Austin (Console, manager of the 1Life service), Breffni McGuiness (Bereavement expert and author), Noleen Blackwell (FLAC) Bishop Eamon Ryan, Rev Patrick Comerford, Brian Whiteside (Humanists), John Devitt (Transparency International), Aoife Smith (MRCI), Catherine Fahy, (St Vincent de Paul), John Redmond (AGSI)
A statement on the necessity to improve safety and health in every workplace in Ireland will be read by Eamon Devoy, General Secretary of the TEEUand chair of the Congress Health & Safety Committee.
Workers Memorial Day is part of the May Day Festival, that runs in Dublin from April 28 to May 7.
