Congress President Slams Bank Boss Payment

21 Apr 2010

Congress President Jack O'Connor has slammed the pension top-up payment for Bank of Ireland boss Richie Boucher and called on Government to ensure it is rescinded.

Speaking after a meeting of the Congress Executive Council, Mr O'Connor said the issue of the payment had been discussed at the meeting, particularly the manner in which it reinforced the perception that there was "one rule for working people and another for those at the top."

Mr O'Connor confirmed that it would have a detrimental impact on the outcome of the ballot on the proposed Croke Park deal.

"Frankly, the matter stinks to high heaven and makes a nonsense of the official assertion that they have drawn a line in the sand, in terms of this sort of outrageous behaviour. This is just more of the same and I do not believe the Government is powerless in this matter, as they would have us believe. This is an issue of political will," Mr O'Connor said.
